Shark and Starfish Flute
This flute was a joy to create. The flute itself is made from white pine. My wife has enhanced the grain by her magic staining techniques. The shark fin is secured on the lower part of the flute with epoxy sculpt clay. I created the effect of a shark blasting through the ocean only leaving waves behind. The totem is all made from poplar. I wanted to give some motion to this creature as it is hunting for its next meal. The ground floor is also made from epoxy sculpt clay. The starfish is looking for a place to hide as the shark passes by. If you would like a flute like this the price starts at $190.00. I can carve any style shark you want. Please email me with any questions you may have.
The shark usually has 5 to 7 gill slits. The shark's jaw is not attached to their cranium. When they are moving water passes through the mouth and over their gills. This provides the oxygen they need to survive. Most sharks must consistantly swim in order to stay alive......and only sleep for a short time. Some species of sharks will loose 30,000 teeth in a lifetime. Their lifespan varies from species to species....but some can live 20 to 30 years. Sharks date back to 450-420 million years in the past.
